About

About August Kay.

August Kay is a pen name. The rest is true enough.

I'm Korean Canadian, an immigrant kid who took her parents' sacrifice seriously. I went to good schools, collected degrees, built a life that makes perfect sense on paper — and then started wondering what happens when you finish building everything and realise you don't actually know what you want anymore.

That question runs through everything I write.

I'm interested in people old enough to be responsible and young enough to change their minds. People who have careers, families, histories, the weight of other people's expectations on their shoulders — and a quiet, inconvenient hunger for something they can't quite name. People whose competence at managing external lives leaves them considerably less equipped to understand their own hearts.

And then another person makes those questions less theoretical.

I write contemporary romance and upmarket fiction about duty and desire, age and timing, the complicated distance between building a life and actually living one. About the women who have it all figured out on paper — and only figure themselves out when the paper runs out.
